Sofa, Bed... Modern Furniture

Flexibility is a very important consideration when planning multi use space. I am really interested in exploring this aspect of interior design, not only because it is how I strive to live my life but as things in our fair city are getting more and more expensive most of us are living in smaller and smaller spaces which need to function well and in multiple roles.
Recently I was commissioned to design an assembly of furniture for a family of three. The room is serene and well lit with beautiful open window space. It is adjacent to the home office and is used primarily as a place of rest, for yoga and relaxation and play with the young child of the home. This is a space where the parents are able to watch their sleeping child and also interact with each other while working from home. It will also be used as a guest bedroom for visitors.

Our concept for this room was centred around creating floor seating, utilizing the walls and windows as back rests, thereby eliminating the need to have a sofa with an affixed back. I separated the assembly into three flexible pieces and two movable back bolsters, each can be moved and repositioned as necessary. In total the piece can sit anywhere from one to 9 individuals, although i rarely see more than 4 people using the space at any one time.
Below you can see the pieces installed in a cluster in the corner...
The medium grey Alcantarra was selected first for durability, then for it's colour and subtle heathered tone.
Above you can see the pieces in place as a sectional with the back bolsters in place. Imagine sitting here against the window, reading, drinking a cup of tea while baby is fast asleep next to you. The seating is at the right height to utilize the window ledge as a bookshelf or as a cup holder. The pieces are high enough off the ground to be safe for baby to climb and stand up against and to be comfortable for an adult to sit. The entire piece is constructed from 6 varying densities of foam. They are sequentially laminated to give a soft yet firm feel. These pieces will easily last twenty years with daily use.
See how happy good furniture makes people feel :)

As an added bonus, the assembly also fits together and with a custom fitted sheet becomes a double bed!
Now that is flexibility.
I wanted to highlight some rather interesting construction details employed int he fabrication of these pieces. The covers are custom fit slipcovers designed to zip off for cleaning or for replacement.
You can se the bottom corner with the zipper sewn in. Look at how clean the application is and how perfect the sewing is. This level of attention and care goes into every piece we manufacture. Most Upholstery sewing is actually quite shoddy and rather imprecise. Not this.

Here you can see the zipper application, terminating into a seam. Go ahead, try doing it, let's see how good you really are :)
MWUUUAHAHAHAHAH!
