Uni Cushion Tutorial

Many of you sushi lovers out there will wonder why I named this detail after the prickly sea urchin... it's because they remind me of little sea urchins ok?
Soft Grey Sheer house has some beautiful cushions... a combination of silk and linen with the Uni detail all over them. Today you get to learn how to make them:)

First we marked the spacing of the urchins, this is critical.

The second step is to place them, fusing them in place to hold them down.

Once they are stuck in place (we were making three cushions), we take them to the machine and stitch them on.

Sewing them on, takes time and accuracy, sadly I was too busy drinking lattes so I had to get our hand model to sew them on. That's right... LATTES!

Next, pucker those lips, gathering in the urchins, forming the beautiful little cartwheels.

Here they are ready to be made into cushions... :)

VOILA!!!

  1. Sorry to nitpick, but unagi is the Japanese word for freshwater eels. Uni is the Japanese word for sea urchins.
