Series 1 Super Sofa
A very good friend of mine, Rebecca Lees from Rebecca Decorates, who is a remarkable designer and a wonderful person recently introduced me to someone I have always wanted to meet, yet never had the formal opportunity... Mr Wood himself (no, not a porn star)... Brent Comber. Anyone who has ever worked in design will know Brent's amazing work, his art pieces and his inspirational story. The original salvage warrior, Brent has redefined how people see wood furniture...and why. Almost every one of my clients owns a Brent Comber original, such is this man's reach. Imagine my glee when Rebecaa suggested to Brent that he orders one of my Series 1 Super Sofas for his new place in West Vancouver. For those in the know,( all 6 of you) the Series 1 Super Sofa really is more of an experience than a sofa... for real. I see furniture as a very different reason than pure aesthetics... furniture is about comfort, flexibility and quality. This may seem obvious but furniture isn't always comfortable, is very inflexible and let's not even get into quality. I spend most of my time at home in a state of repose, like a Roman lord I prefer the horizontal plane. I like to lounge, hence the introduction of the Super lounger itself... I designed this piece to act as a sofa, a bed, a chair, a low retaining wall... whatever. It is almost entirely constructed of multi laminated and sequentially assembled industrial grade foam. The sofa itself is virtually indestructable, designed to withstand the extreme pressures of relaxation. Ultimately flexible and available in any size shape or configuration it adapts itself to the needs of the owner like no other piece of furniture. Enough sales schmoozing... lets move on to the meat and potatoes....
When people want quality they come to me, when I want quality I go to Chivasso. Not Italy, Holland. Chivasso is a fabric collection which I use all the time. A subsidiary of JAB, Chivasso is kinda like the rockstar of the fabric world... For Bren't Sofa I used a heavy brushed cotton. It's comfortable, sexy and so so soft.... Cotton is cool to the touch, warm on the senses and easy to care for. Natural textiles always invite you in, they make you feel loved. I use natural textiles... always.
Moving the Sofa is never a small feat....weighing in at close to 500lbs this beast is just that. Quality weighs a lot. The sofa is entirely constructed from foam of a 6 pound density. To give you an idea of just how ridiculous that is, your typical camping foam mattress is about 1.2 lbs, your average overpriced Italian sofa weighs in between 1.6 and 2.2 lbs. Commercial grade institutional seating weighs in close to about 2.6 to 2.9 lbs.... the heavier the foam the more actual foam is in it, the longer it's going to last and the more evenly it's going to disperse the weight from your tush... also known as comfort. Foam mattresses which are designed to last 10+ years with daily use of 8 hours are only 4lbs at best... Am I making my point? To move this mother in law of a sofa I employed the muscles of the fabulous and gorgeous Celina Dalrymple... no I couldn't just hire a mover, moving this sofa also had to involve celebrity muscle. Celina owns and operates a fabulous company that designs and upholsters furniture right here in Vancouver... Fabulous Furnishings caters to the jet set and will soon be featured on an upcoming episode of the RHWV to prove it.... Brent stood by and supervised the whole thing. Expertly I might add....
Thank you Mr Comber, you are an inspiration.
