Once in a while it is important to look back. Open the archives, look around, dust off the books and pull out a piece of history.
2008 was a very challenging year. This was the most challenging project of that most challenging year. It was my first project with Vancouver's superstar architecture firm Battersby Howat.
Sometimes we undertake projects that really test our mettle, we go into the fire with no protection hoping we will come out on the other end. This project was seminal, it took place at a time where my own personal life was falling apart, where I myself was fighting off some of my own personal demons... My work is like perfume to my senses. When I see a project I have done in the past it automatically reminds me of what was happening at that time in my life. My work is such a huge part of my life, and my life is literally woven into my work in an indellible stain only obvious to me. So when I see this it reminds me of a time when things were very challenging, it reminds me of a time where life wasn't so good. It also reminds me of how in even the most difficult of situations we can prevail and we often do. I dedicate this post to all those people who are in it now, experiencing difficulties, experiencing challenges... maybe emotionally, maybe financially... maybe in any other way that is relevant to them. I hope that sharing some of my own struggles and the successes that have come through those struggles will help others see that we all suffer in the same way and that holding up this charade is not helping any of us heal. It just makes it worse.
So now that thats over let me tell you about this curtain wall! 52 feet wide and 11 feet long. yes, it has the floor size of a vancouver condo! when you factor in the fullness you have a small west side home! The curtain was designed with a lower partition in a solid fabric, this blocked the streetview and allowed privacy.
The curtains were designed to stack onto the wall spaces.... Pretty awesome huh... HUGE!
This pretty much sums it up....
Have a great day!
Ravi!
i like the design idea of two fabrics. Have you ever had difficulty mixing fabrics and having them sag out of shape? What fabrics did you use for this project? Are these hand draw draperies? Your work is always inspiring.
ReplyDeletehi kathy.
ReplyDeleteNo. we choose fabrics that are suitable to be with one another for the long haul.
the sheer is a poly voile, the solid is a cotton linen blend.
They are hand drawn, almost all our curtains are hand drawn.
Thank you for your kind words....
Ravi!
