Ravi Design (aka Stacey, Anna and moi!) are embarking on a new voyage. I have decided to once again redefine the nature of my work. In this newest direction I am hoping to not only elevate my work to a new level but also to completely alter the language and understanding of window coverings as they are perceived by the layman. 2010 has seen some absolutely new and groundbreaking ideas and I hope 2011 will be just as fruitful creatively.
To this end I have been working for the better part of two years to create new and innovative fabrics, fabric finishes, textile concepts so radically different that they will indeed change the entire narrative of our work. First among these concepts to reach the market is a simple looking but labour intensive process of grommeting which I have labelled Points of Light.
Recently I was commissioned to design, fabricate and install a MASSIVE curtain/ partition for an apartment on Beatty Street. The owners of said apartment wanted to close of their bedroom with a curtain to block out the sun in the morning, and offer a little quite and privacy from the rest of the apartment. They had installed an amazing glass partition for the purpose of quietness, but felt the space needed Ravi's Magic Touch. :)
My proposal included several samples, various ideas and concepts, but the one that really seemed to be perfect for the space was the nylon grometted drapery we settled on. I proposed a full length curtain (12 feet long) with handset individual grommets raining down from the top to the bottom, starting very open to a heavily clustered at the bottom. I felt the little beams of light coming through every little grommet would appear like little LED lights, or Swarovski crystals...
There were over 3000 individual hand set grommets, meticulously and purposely placed to give this simple but incredibly effective concept life.
The Drapery was constructed from a black heavy parachute cloth, very strong, very industrial and entirely relevant. The curtains were hung from an industrial Grade super sleek track, designed to melt into the concrete ceiling undetected but to function smoothly and quietly. The curtains follow a custom ripplefold, the style chosen was based on the form I wanted the curtain to follow.
Anna, the super sewer, making the curtains, sewing the panels together.
Hemming the curtains... Huge amounts of material!
Hanging in place the curtains are naturally backlit, throwing a beautiful random pattern all over the concrete floor.
The immensity of the curtains here are obvious... huge number of grommets!
Again observe the patterns, look at the pinholes!
A view upwards.. they are very long indeed!
