Something New....

Aaaaaah... who doesn't love a good bit of handcarved furniture...
Vancouver is full of amazing talent. I wonder if many people in this city know the level of amazing craftspeople that reside and work right here... And I am not talking about me this time... I am specifically talking about one Ben Furse, master carver and gilder... a man who's reputation precedes him. I have had the pleasure of working around Ben's work for many years and specifically in one home where his talented hands have brought the beauty of natural woods to life through his hand carving. Recently one of our clients asked Ben to carve him some bar stools for his amazing bar.... which Ben also carved , and I also upholstered... So here we are again, once again, Ben creating art and me wrapping it in leather....

The barstools are very masculine, very heavy planted securely on the floor. The challenge for me was finding a leather that I liked enough to present to my client, I settled on a semi aniline cocoa coloured leather to match the bar... you can read about that here.

In design there is a constant battle between imagination and restraint. In this example I decided the barstools were magnificent enough, the upholstery needed to be minimal and almost contemporary. I didn't want to add any superfluous detail or have any competition for the magnificent carving. Look at the amazing table, the carving is remarkable.

A small detail of the carving.

I am ready for a drink, boulevardier perhaps...
